Pyogenic Granuloma

Pyogenic Granuloma
  • A misnomer because neither granulomatous inflammation nor pyogenic process is present.
  • Aberrant wound healing process, which results in fibrovascularized tissue growth.
  • Rarely occur spontaneously.
  • Usually occurs over chalazion, after conjunctival surface surgery such as strabismus surgery, or pterygium removal, chronic irritation from nasolacrimal tubing or punctal plugs.

Clinical Features

  • Symptoms:
    • Irritation
    • May cause inadequate lid closure or corneal dellen if located near the limbus
  • Signs:
    • Initially presents as ovoid mass with pedunculated base, which may broaden over time
    • Fibrous adhesion to the underlying sclera.
  • Treatment of choice: simple excision at of the base of the lesion.
