Broken Sutures

Broken interrupted suture with covering mucous strands 5 months after penetrating keratoplasty.
  • Broken interrupted sutures may occur spontaneously post penetrating keratoplasty.
  • It may also be caused by:
    • Trauma
    • Loosening sutures
    • Degraded suture material
  • Maybe complicated by:
    • Wound dehiscence and leakage
    • Suture abscess
    • Endophthalmitis

Management

  • Suture removal.
  • Careful assessment for wound dehiscence.
  • Surgical repair or wound re-suturing to secure intraocular integrity, repair astigmatism and avoid further complications.
  • Topical antibiotics.
