Chalazion

Chalazion in the right lower lid
  • Focal granulomatous inflammation of the eyelids, which results from chronic meibomian glands obstruction

Clinical Features

  • Unilateral, firm, nodular lesion within the tarsal plate
  • The overlying skin may be hyperemic or normal in color
  • Symptoms
    • may be painless or tender
    • visual distortion if the lesion grows towards the globe

Treatments

  • Lid hygiene and warm compress
  • Topical antibiotics or anti-inflammatory
  • Systemic antibiotic i.e. doxycycline may be prescribed
  • Surgical incision for persistent inflammation
