Treatments and Services

Columbia ophthalmologists and optometrists offer a wide range of diagnostic and screening services as part of our routine and comprehensive eye exams to make sure we find and treat your eye problems immediately. The faster we stop vision loss, the more we can save your eyesight. The diagnostic evaluations we perform include:

  • Assessment and monitoring of eye conditions and related health conditions.
  • Comprehensive annual eye examinations, which includes:
    •  Visual Acuity — measures the clearness and sharpness of your vision given from a certain distance
    • Dilated Eye Exam — drops are administered to widen, or dilate, the pupils. Then a special magnifying lens is used to examine if there is retinal or optic nerve damage or other eye problems. Your vision might remain blurred for several hours.
    • Refraction or Vision Test helps determine eyeglass prescriptions using a special device called a phoropter or refractor.
    • Slit-Lamp Evaluation — a microscope with a bright light is used to look closely around the eyes to detect macular degeneration and retinal health.
    • Visual Field Testing — used to evaluate any blind spots and how well you can see out of the corners of your eye.
  • Geriatric services
  • Low vision services
  • Prescriptions for glasses or contact lenses
  • Screenings for diseases
    • Ophthalmoscopy (fundoscopy) — a small instrument is used to see in the back part of the eye and exam the retina and other areas.
    • Tonometry — used to screen for glaucoma, this test examines the fluid pressure inside the eye. We will apply numbing drops to your eye for this test.
    • Gonioscopy — used to examine the area between the cornea and the iris to diagnose eye conditions such as glaucoma.
    • Pachymetry — For this test, we use an ultrasonic wave instrument to measure the thickness of the cornea. A numbing drop is applied to the eye beforehand.
    • Optical Coherence Tomography —This test measures optic nerve thickness. In glaucoma, the nerve fiber layers (the fibers that make up the optic nerve) can get thinner as the disease progresses.

Why Choose Columbia?

Our ophthalmologists are trained to detect all eye conditions that affect vision. Cataracts can be found during a comprehensive eye exam, so it is important to see our ophthalmologist every year. Be rest assured—not every disease or eye disorder requires surgery. We also provide non-surgical treatments for less severe forms of eye disorders. Our number one goal is to make sure you see as well as possible.

And in addition to our comprehensive services, we offer services specially designed for elderly patients. When treating our elderly patients, our ophthalmologists use specialized expertise and experience to address any geriatric syndromes that might affect the patient’s evaluation, treatment, and prognosis.

Our team collaborates with The Jewish Guild Healthcare to provide exceptional rehabilitation services for patients with low vision that cannot be adequately corrected with medical or surgical therapy, conventional eyewear, or contact lenses. Low vision rehabilitation services do not cure the condition, but they can help patients use their remaining vision to its fullest potential.
